Secretary of State Rex Tillerson reportedly offered “free lunch” to North Korea on Tuesday, announcing at the Atlantic Council that the America is “ready to have the first meeting without precondition.”
The Washington Free Beacon quoted him to say
Let’s just meet, and we can talk about the weather if you want… Talk about whether it’s going to be a square table or a round table, if that’s what you are excited about. But can we at least sit down and see each other face to face, and then we can begin to lay out a map, a road map of what we might be willing to work towards.
At that point yesterday he altered his opinion. At an extraordinary clerical meeting at the U.N. Security Council, he purportedly said
As I said not long ago, a managed end of North Korea’s debilitating conduct must happen before talks can start. North Korea must procure its way back to the table… The weight battle should and will proceed until the point when denuclearization is accomplished. We will meanwhile keep our channels of correspondence open.
What’s more, Tillerson specifically called out Russia and China for supporting North Korea.
We particularly call on Russia and China to increase pressure, including going beyond full implementation of the U.N. Security Council resolutions… Continuing to allow North Korean laborers to toil in slave-like conditions inside Russia in exchange for wages used to fund nuclear weapons programs calls into question Russia’s dedication as a partner for peace.
And as expected, the White House was not happy with Tillerson.
